Careers
Careers education is a core component of the curriculum at Baginton Fields Academy and is embedded across all key stages. The programme is designed to develop students' transferable life and social skills, enabling them to transition confidently into meaningful roles within society. Key themes—communication, independence, and decision-making—are consistently prioritised, particularly through PSHE.
Across the curriculum, subjects such as Mathematics, English, and ICT focus on practical applications, leading to accredited functional skills qualifications. This broad and ambitious curriculum provides students with a variety of rich learning experiences, including enterprise projects that foster problem-solving, planning, and organisational skills.
From September 2025, all students in Key Stages 3 and 4 will access a dedicated weekly Careers and Skills for Life lesson. These sessions support students in exploring the world of work, understanding their strengths, and building vital employability and life skills. As part of this programme, students take part in practical enterprise activities, including designing and marketing products, developing customer service and communication skills, learning about handling money and calculating profit, and taking on different teamwork roles such as cashier or greeter. Health and safety, risk awareness, and the ability to reflect and improve are also embedded throughout.
The programme is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all pathways, with content, delivery, and experiences adapted to suit each student’s learning style, communication method, and level of need. Whether working towards supported internships, further education, social care, or independent living, every student will have meaningful experiences that support their personal goals and preparation for adulthood.
Students also identify and develop essential skills using the Skills Builder framework, helping them make meaningful links between their classroom learning and real-world applications. This structured approach enables students to understand how core skills such as problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and communication are used in everyday life and employment, and how they can develop them over time.
To enrich this curriculum, external visitors provide students with up-to-date labour market information and insights into different careers, industries, and post-school pathways. These encounters offer valuable perspectives on learning beyond the classroom and help students prepare for life outside of school.
In Key Stage 5, careers and work-related learning become increasingly personalised. Students explore sectors such as horticulture, retail, catering, and the creative industries, selecting pathways aligned to their interests. The curriculum includes ASDAN Personal Progress qualifications, travel training, and practical learning experiences to support smooth transitions into further education, social care, or supported internships.
As students progress through the academy, careers education becomes more targeted. This culminates in the ASDAN Employability qualification, which covers essential job skills, teamwork, communication, and workplace expectations. Students also take part in internal and external work experience placements, preparing them to take their next steps with confidence.
